Green Rosella
Common Name: Green Rosella or Tasmanian Rosella
Scientific Name: Platycercus caledonicus
Native to: Tasmania and Bass Strait Islands
What does it look like: The Green Rosella is the largest species of rosella in Australia. It is a medium-sized parrot with a long tail. Its back is mostly black and green, contrasting its yellow head, neck and underbody. It has distinct blue patches on its cheeks and shoulders and a red band above its beak. Green Rosellas have a blue-green tail. Female Green Rosellas have slightly duller (less colourful) yellow feathers and have a more visible red marking than their male counterpart.
Diet and Habitat: The Green Rosella prefers thick, moist forests and savanna woodlands but is found in most Tasmanian habitats that have trees. Green Rosellas make their nests in hollow trees. Green Rosella's diets are mostly herbivorous (eats plants), mainly eating seeds, fruits, flowers, nuts and nectar, but may also eat larvae and insects. Green Rosellas forage in the canopy (in trees) and the ground.
STEM Fun Fact: The Green Rosella is endemic to Tasmania and the Bass Strait Islands. This means it is only found in these areas.
